Let’s talk about the great ‘P’ word. Periods.
The fact is that periods are a part of everyday life. So much so, that while you’re reading this, it’s estimated that about 300 million women (that’s 1 in 7) are having their periods right now across the globe.
It’s shocking then (and unacceptable) that many still consider it a major taboo.
For many girls, their periods are a source of embarrassment and discomfort. And the repercussions of this run deeper than shame.
Due to the stigma attached to periods, many girls are not adequately educated on how to deal with their cycle safely and hygienically. Not only does this pose a risk to their health, but it also leads them to miss out on essential activities such as school, or work. In other words, even if we’re in 2019, periods stop women and girls from living their lives.
It’s Time to Take Action
At Hardy Henry Services, we are not only the leading pest control and hygiene services company in Mauritius. We also care about initiatives which help to promote better hygiene standards across Mauritius.
That’s why we are delighted to support the Menstrual Hygiene Day, a global advocacy platform, initiated by the German non-profit organisation WASH United in 2013, to promote good menstrual hygiene standards for all women and girls.
The theme for this year is ‘It’s Time for Action’ and the platform’s mission is to:
- Break the silence and remove the stigma attached to menstruation and raise awareness.
- Engage decision makers to increase the political priority and propel action for menstrual hygiene management at national and international levels.
We consider it our duty to show young girls that life doesn’t need to stop when they have their periods and to show them how to handle them hygienically and safely.
To empower and educate them, we created a series of educational posters – for girls and boys – which discuss the importance of a hygienic approach towards periods and which break the myths surrounding this natural aspect of a woman’s life. You can download them for free right here.
